Sudan: From the Red Sea to the Pyramids of Meroe

Itinerary:

Day 1. Arrival in Port Sudan
Arrival in Port Sudan in the early morning on a working day, an important requirement in order to complete the necessary travel/movement permit for the journey to Meroe. Upon arrival, we will be met by our local team and transferred into the city. The necessary arrangements and permit procedures will be completed before we settle into our accommodation. The remainder of the day will be free to rest after the journey or explore Port Sudan independently. (-/-/-)

Day 2. Port Sudan City Tour
Today is dedicated to discovering Port Sudan, Sudan’s main port on the Red Sea and an important commercial centre in the eastern part of the country. During our guided city tour, we will explore the character of this coastal city and gain an introduction to its history, daily life and importance as a gateway between Sudan and the Red Sea. The remainder of the day will be at leisure, allowing time to relax or continue exploring the city independently. (-/-/-)

Day 3. Port Sudan - Atbara - Meroe Pyramids Area
We leave Port Sudan behind and begin our journey inland towards the Nile Valley. The route takes us through the changing landscapes of eastern Sudan as the Red Sea coast gradually gives way to more arid inland terrain. We will stop in Atbara, an important transport and railway centre, before continuing towards the area of Meroe. The long overland journey provides an opportunity to experience the vast and sparsely populated landscapes of eastern Sudan. (-/-/-)

Day 4. Atbara - Meroe
We continue towards Meroe and its remarkable archaeological heritage. The landscape gradually becomes dominated by desert and rocky terrain as we approach the ancient heartland of the Kingdom of Kush. The Pyramids of Meroe stand among the sands as one of Sudan’s most recognizable historical landmarks, with their distinctive narrow forms and steep sides creating a striking contrast against the surrounding desert. We will have time to explore the archaeological area and appreciate the remains of this ancient civilization. (-/-/-)

Day 5. Meroe - Arkaweet, Eastern Sudan
Leaving the ancient sites of Meroe behind, we begin the journey back towards eastern Sudan and the mountains of Arkaweet. The route takes us through remote landscapes where the character of the terrain gradually changes from desert plains to rugged highlands. Arkaweet offers a completely different setting from the Nile Valley and Red Sea coast, with its elevated location and distinctive mountain environment. Upon arrival, we will have time to relax and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. (-/-/-)

Day 6. Arkaweet - Port Sudan via Suakin
Our return journey towards the Red Sea takes us through Suakin, one of the historic ports of the region. We will visit Suakin Island and explore its atmospheric remains, which reflect the importance the port once held as a centre of trade and maritime activity. The historic buildings and ruins provide a fascinating glimpse into the past of this once-thriving Red Sea port. After the visit, we continue towards Port Sudan, where we will spend our final night. Day 7. Port Sudan - Departure
Following the final morning in Port Sudan, we will be transferred to Port Sudan International Airport for our departure. This marks the end of our journey through eastern Sudan, from the Red Sea coast and historic Suakin to the ancient pyramids of Meroe and the mountains of Arkaweet. End of services. (-/-/-)
