Designed for intrepid expedition travelers, this journey dives deep into southeastern Senegal’s Kédougou region, offering rare encounters with minority ethnic communities and their living traditions. The adventure continues through the wild landscapes of Casamance and into the cultural heart of western Gambia. The Kedougou festival celebrates the rich cultural heritage, traditions and artistic expressions of several minority ethnic groups of the region — including the Bassari, Bedik, Coniagui and Djallonké peoples — as well as neighboring communities like the Peulh and Malinké.

Itinerary:

Day 1. Arrival in Senegal & Transfer to Mbour

Arrive at the international airport and meet your local team. Transfer south along the coast to Mbour, a lively fishing town, where your journey begins. Settle into your accommodation and enjoy your first evening by the Atlantic.

Day 2. Mbour -Sokone - Saloum Delta | Serer Traditions

Begin the day exploring Mbour’s bustling market and vibrant fishing port, where colorful pirogues and daily catches set the rhythm of coastal life. Travel onward to Sokone, gateway to the Saloum Delta, a UNESCO-listed maze of mangroves and waterways. In the evening, enjoy a deep cultural immersion with Serer village women, sharing stories, traditions, and local cuisine. Overnight at Barracudas Lodge. B/-/-

Day 3. Sokone - Kunta Kinteh Island - Senegambia (The Gambia)

Depart Sokone and journey along the river to Kunta Kinteh Island (James Island), a powerful and moving visit to one of West Africa’s most important slave-trade sites and a UNESCO World Heritage landmark. Continue toward the border and cross into The Gambia, reaching the lively Senegambia area. Check in at a beachfront hotel for a two-night stay, then head out for an evening stroll and dinner in town, experiencing Senegambia’s relaxed coastal vibe and nightlife. B/-/-

Day 4. Banjul - Mangroves & Sacred Wildlife (The Gambia)

Explore Banjul’s old town on a guided city tour, discovering its colonial history, markets, and everyday life along the river. Continue to Bijilo Forest Park for a guided walk through coastal woodland, where you’ll encounter green vervet and red colobus monkeys in their natural habitat.

Later, embark on a scenic boat excursion through the mangroves, gliding along narrow waterways rich in birdlife. Conclude the day at the Kachikally Sacred Crocodile Pool, coming face-to-face with revered Nile crocodiles in one of The Gambia’s most iconic spiritual sites. B/-/-

Day 5. Casamance (Senegal) - Ziguinchor - Oussouye - Aljowe

Travel into the lush Casamance region, beginning with a visit to Ziguinchor, the regional capital. Explore the lively Tilène Market, a hub of trade and local life. Continue to Oussouye for a rare audience with the Diola king, offering insight into one of Senegal’s most enduring traditional monarchies. Visit a local cashew nut processing factory, then head into surrounding villages for meaningful social immersion with the Diola community. In the evening, settle into traditional Impluvium huts in Aljowe, sleeping beneath palm-thatched roofs in the heart of the village. B/-/-

Day 6. Oussouye - Pointe Saint Georges - Egueye Island

Visit the Diola Culture Museum at M’Lomp to uncover the rich heritage of the Diola people. Climb to the observation platform of Kanoufa, atop a massive fromager (kapok) tree, for sweeping views of the surrounding forest. Explore Saint-Georges village and its stunning natural surroundings. Enjoy a picnic before venturing through the dense forest to Egueye Island, where you’ll spend the night disconnected from the world, immersed in nature. B/-/-

Day 7. Egueye - Cap Skiring - Kolda

Begin the day with a journey to Kadioute de Boucotte, deep in the forest, to learn about Diola traditions and the mystical power of local fetishes. Witness the arrival of local fishermen at the harbor and visit the artisanal village. Enjoy lunch on Cap Skiring’s pristine white sand beach, one of West Africa’s finest. Continue your journey to Kolda, former capital of the Fula kingdom, for an overnight stay. B/-/-

Day 8. Kolda - Bandafassi - Iwol - Kedougou Festival

Stop at the Kolda market, then visit Bandafassi village to learn about traditional Bassari culture. In the afternoon, immerse yourself in Iwol village, where the village chief shares the community’s mysterious stories. Attend one of Casamance’s most fascinating initiation festivals, featuring traditional dances and vibrant ceremonial performances. Overnight at Le Bedik Camp (2 nights). B/-/-

Day 9. Kedougou - Dindefelo Waterfall

Day 10. Kedougou - Tambacounda - Kaolack

Transfer from Eastern Senegal to Kaolack, stopping along the way to admire giant baobabs, scenic villages, and rural landscapes. Arrive in Kaolack for an overnight stay. B/-/-

Day 11. Kaolack - Touba - Saint-Louis

Begin the day at Kaolack’s bustling animal market, a hub of rural trade. Continue to Touba, home to the magnificent Grand Mosque, a spiritual center of Senegal. Day 12. Kayar - Lac Rose - Departure

Visit Kayar, one of Senegal’s most important fishing villages, and witness the daily life of local fishermen. Learn about salt harvesting at Lac Rose, the iconic pink lake.
