Kazakhstan's Soviet Legacy

Itinerary:

Day 1. Arrival in Aktau
Morning arrival in Aktau on the Caspian Sea, transfer to the hotel fo check-in. Spend the afternoon exploring Aktau, known for its seaside atmosphere and its layout based on numbered micro-districts, a legacy of Soviet urban planning. The city offers glimpses into Kazakhstan’s oil economy as well as views over the Caspian coastline. (-/-/-)

Day 2. Mangistau. Aktau - Torysh (Valley of Balls) - Ayrakty (Valley of Castle-Shaped Mountains)
Mangystau Region is one of the most unusual places in Central Asia because it combines surreal desert geology, Silk Road history, sacred religious sites, and the coastline of the Caspian Sea. We start our Mangistau adventure after breakfast, driving about 4-5 hours to Torysh. Torysh, is one of the weirdest natural sites in the area.where thousands of nearly spherical stone boulders are scattered across the desert. Then, we continue to Ayrakty, which is famous for its limestone hills and cliffs that rise from the desert like ruined castles, towers, and fortresses. The shapes are so regular and vertical that early travelers, including the poet Taras Shevchenko, described it as a “Valley of Castles”. Overnight in a tent. (B/L/D)

Day 3. Ayrakty - Tuzbair
Like much of Mangystau, Tuzbair was once part of an ancient ocean (Tethys Sea). Tuzbair is famous for its vast salt flats (salt crust desert). When it rains, the surface can turn into a shallow reflective mirror, blending sky and ground into one continuous space. Even when dry, the cracked white salt creates geometric patterns that look almost artificial. Overnight in a tent. (B/L/D)

Day 4. Tuzbair - Kyzylkup - Bozzhyra - Aktau
Our journey continue to Kyzylkup, famous for hills made of perfectly stacked sediment layers in red, white, yellow, and brown tones. The pattern looks so artificial that locals nicknamed it “Tiramisu”. The next stop is Bozzhyra, a vast erosion landscape on the edge of the Ustyurt Plateau, filled with towering white chalk cliffs, deep canyon-like valleys and razor-sharp ridges and plateaus. Drive back to our hotel in Aktau for overnight. (B/L/-)

Day 5. Train Aktau - Aralsk
Today, we embark on a long and scenic train ride across Kazakhstan’s vast and varied terrain. Departing in the morning, we’ll travel eastward to Aralsk, once a bustling fishing port on the Aral Sea. The journey, lasting about 21 hours, offers a chance to witness the steppe landscape roll by and to meet locals on board. (B/-/-)

Day 6. Aralsk - Aral Sea - Baikonur
Arriving in Aralsk early in the morning we take a jeep tour directly from the railway to the dramatic remnants of the Aral Sea. This surreal, shrinking body of water stands as a powerful symbol of human impact on nature. After exploring the area, we drive back to Aralsk to visit the museum and then continue southward by road to Baikonur, the city synonymous with space exploration. Baikonur city tour in the afternoon including visit to the Space Museum and the Internatuinal Space College. Hotel in Baikonur.  (-/-/-)

Day 7. Baikonur - Kyzylorda - Almaty
Transfer to Kyzylorda (2-3 hours drive) and then board our flight to Almaty. Hotel in Almaty. Pick up from the airport and a city tour in the afternoon before we check-in at our hotel. Almaty is a cosmopolitan city framed by mountains. We visit its key sites including the lively Green Bazaar, the Russian Orthodox Zenkov Cathedral, and the historic Panfilov Park. (-/-/-)

Day 8. Almaty - Charyn Canyon - Kaindy Lake - Saty Village
We drive early morning to Charyn Canyon, which is one of the most remarkable natural landmarks in Kazakhstan. The canyon stretches about 154 km and reaches depths of up to 300 meters, formed over millions of years. We take a walk in the "Valley of Castles". Overnight in a guest house in Saty village. (B/-/D)

Day 9. Saty Village - Kolsai Lake - Almaty
After breakfast, continue to Kolsai National Park. The Kolsai Lakes are actually a system of three mountain lakes located in the northern Tian Shan Mountains near the border with Kyrgyzstan. Each lake sits at a different elevation and has its own character. The water is often a deep turquoise or emerald color. On calm days, the surrounding pine forests and snow-capped peaks are reflected almost perfectly on the lake surface. Back to Almaty for overnight. (B/-/-)

Day 10. Departure
Transfer to the airport on your own for departure. End of services. (B/-/-)
