What do you get when you mix cutting-edge rocket science with the wild, untamed beauty of the Amazon? A spaceport like no other. Welcome to the Kourou Space Center in French Guiana—a place where European precision meets tropical flair, and humanity’s ambitions to explore the cosmos are fueled by equatorial physics and a dash of jungle mystique. We visit the space center during our trip to Suriname, Guyana and French Guiana and it is one of the highlights of the tour for both our clients and guides.
The Equatorial Advantage
Why here, of all places? French Guiana may seem an unlikely spot for a spaceport, but its location just 5° north of the equator makes it a physics jackpot. Rockets launched from Kourou get an extra boost from the Earth’s rotational speed, a kind of cosmic slingshot that saves fuel and adds efficiency. But don’t let the science intimidate you—this is also a place where the wonders of space exploration come alive in a way that’s accessible, awe-inspiring, and just a little bit surreal. After all, how often do you get to see rockets prepped for liftoff surrounded by lush rainforests and flocks of tropical birds?
What Makes Kourou So Special?
This isn’t your typical "keep out" high-security science facility. The Kourou Space Center invites visitors to step behind the scenes and see what it takes to launch a hunk of human ingenuity into the great unknown. Here’s what you’ll experience:
A Space Center That Stands Out
What sets Kourou apart isn’t just the rockets or the science—it’s the juxtaposition of space-age technology with its jungle surroundings. As you wander through the site, you might spot macaws perched nearby or hear the hum of cicadas blending with the whir of machinery. It’s like the rainforest and the cosmos decided to co-host an epic party, and you’re on the VIP list.
Plan Your Visit Like a Pro
Book Early: Tours are popular, so snag your spot in advance (visiting the Space Center is part of our itinerary, so if you book with us, you don't need to worry about this part).
Dress Smart: The jungle heat is no joke. Light clothing, comfortable shoes, and plenty of sunscreen will keep you cool.
Time It Right: The space center is closed for visitors for a week then there is a launch. This means you can not visit the space center itself, however, if you happen to be in the city at the day of the launch, you can see it from certain viewpoints in the city.
Not Just Rockets: Explore Kourou
Once you’ve had your fill of space exploration, the town of Kourou offers plenty to keep you entertained. Take a boat trip to the Îles du Salut (Salvation Islands), where history and beauty collide. Or simply relax on the local beaches, where golden sands and gentle waves provide a perfect counterpoint to the high-energy vibe of the space center.
Why Kourou is Worth the Trip
The Kourou Space Center isn’t just a place—it’s an experience. It’s a reminder of what humans can achieve when ambition meets innovation. It’s where science fiction edges closer to reality, and where the dreamers among us are reminded that the sky isn’t the limit—it’s just the beginning. So, next time someone asks if you’ve ever been to space, you can smile knowingly and say, “Not quite. But I’ve been to Kourou, and that’s close enough.”

Just off the coast of French Guiana, the Îles du Salut (Salvation Islands) shimmer like emerald jewels in the Atlantic, enticing travelers with their beauty and enigmatic past. The name might suggest refuge, but for most who came here, salvation was the furthest thing from reality. The islands were so named because they offered a safe haven from the deadly diseases that ravaged French Guiana's...
