At Penguin Travel, we believe in the power of authentic experiences, and there are few places as untouched and awe-inspiring as Gabon. Nestled on the west coast of Central Africa, Gabon is a sanctuary for nature lovers and a testament to the beauty of unspoiled wilderness. Our tours are designed to immerse you in Gabon's incredible landscapes and wildlife, offering a truly unique adventure. Gabon is also a country that stands out globally as a leader in conservation efforts, adding another meaningful layer to your journey. By visiting Gabon, you’re not only exploring breathtaking natural environments but also supporting a country renowned for its commitment to preserving its rich biodiversity.
Gabon is home to some of the most intact and diverse ecosystems in Africa. Approximately 85% of the country is covered by dense rainforests, which serve as a sanctuary for a wide array of wildlife. The country's commitment to preserving its natural heritage is evident, with 13 national parks covering over 11% of its land area. One of the highlights of our tours is Lopé National Park. As the oldest park in Gabon, Lopé is a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its unique combination of dense rainforests and savannas. Visitors here can track mandrills, the world’s largest monkeys. During the dry season (July–August), mandrills are highly visible in the reserve's northern region for up to two weeks at a time. In 1996, a record-breaking 1,350 mandrills, the largest known wild primate gathering, were spotted in this area. You can also observe a variety of other wildlife, like forest elephants and buffaloes. Additionally, Lopé National Park is home to significant archaeological sites that provide insight into human settlements dating back over 400,000 years. In addition to the larger parks, we also visit the Nyonie Reserve, a lesser-known but equally stunning destination. Situated along the Atlantic coast, Nyonie offers a mix of savanna and forest ecosystems. The guided tours here provide intimate encounters with wildlife such as elephants, buffaloes, and a variety of bird species. Nyonie is perfect for those seeking a serene and less-traveled path in Gabon.
Gabon, a global beacon of climate action and environmental conservation, sets a remarkable example. The country's unwavering commitment to safeguarding its natural heritage is unmistakable in its expansive network of protected areas and forward-thinking conservation policies. In 2002, Gabon unveiled its ambitious plan to establish a series of protected areas, a vision that led to the formation of the National Agency for National Parks. Today, Gabon proudly hosts 13 national parks and two World Heritage sites. Moreover, the country has identified nine Ramsar Wetlands of International Importance, encompassing approximately 22 percent of its land area. These initiatives ensure the preservation of an affluent net of ecosystems, from dense rainforests to expansive wetlands. Offshore, Gabon has established 20 marine protected areas spanning 20,060 square miles (51,955 sq km), which represent about 26 percent of its ocean territory. These marine sanctuaries safeguard critical habitats for a variety of marine species and contribute to global biodiversity conservation. The creation of these parks and protected areas is part of Gabon's broader strategy to diversify its economy and reduce reliance on oil. By focusing on sustainable tourism, Gabon aims to create environmentally responsible and beneficial economic opportunities for local communities. Sustainable tourism offers a way to generate revenue while preserving the country's natural beauty and ecological integrity. In 2010, Gabon implemented a total ban on log exports. This significant move underscores Gabon's commitment to preserving its forests and biodiversity. When you explore Gabon's forests with us, you witness the positive impact of these bold conservation measures firsthand.
Despite its impressive conservation efforts, Gabon faces challenges. Deforestation, driven by logging and agriculture, threatens the country's forests. Balancing economic development with environmental preservation is an ongoing struggle. However, Gabon's commitment to sustainable development is evident in its participation in global initiatives like the Central African Forest Initiative (CAFI) and its efforts to promote sustainable logging practices. By fostering partnerships with international organizations, Gabon continues to seek innovative solutions to protect its natural heritage.
