Plana-Verila Trail Ride - 3 days

Plana-Verila Trail Ride - 3 days
Share this

Plana and Verila are comparatively small mountains, just 30 km south from the capital Sofia with their highest points not exceeding 1300-1400 m.
Unlike their neighbour – Vitosha, Plana and Verila remain almost untouched by the mass tourism. Their gentle terrain, open spaces and rolling hills are ideal place for mountainbike tours and horse riding.
The riding base Plana is located 35 km (50 min drive) from Sofia's center.
The stables accommodate about 30 horses most of them Shagya Arabs, pure Arabians and cross breeds of Shagya and East Bulgarian horses. All of them are well trained for trail riding and range in height from 15hh to 16hh (150cm to 165cm).
On this ride we use good quality English saddles.

Day 1: Sofia - Plana - Belchin
Early transfer from Sofia to Plana riding base. After getting aquainted with our horses we set off to the south. The ride will take us over varied terrain from open river valleys, to rocky mountain slopes and finally down a forested mountain path until we reach the village of Belchin.
This day we will experience several long canters and after approximately six hours in the saddle and covering about 35-40 km, we arrive in the village, where we will overnight in a guesthouse with a local family. We will also have time to rest and refresh in the pool in the spa center nearby.

Day 2: Belchin – Lisets (Verila)
The trail today winds through shady forests of beech and birch trees. The ride takes us through Samokov valley up into Verila on a combination of bridle paths and forestry tracks
Today we may be lucky enough to see wild boars or red deer.. There will be limited opportunities for canters as the terrain is much steeper.
Today we ride for approximately 7 hours and arrive in the small village of Lisets in the late afternoon.

Day 3: Lisets – Plana – Sofia
Today there will be some good canters over the hills and through shady forests. Ride back into the Samokov valley. It is a nice trail along the ridge above the village of Kovachevtsi. From here, ascend back towards the riding base in Plana where our ride ends. Transfer back to Sofia.
The distance covered is around 35 km and the riding time is approximately 5-6 hours.

Plana-Verila Trail Ride - 3 days (Rated 4.84 / 5 Based on 280 Reviews.)

The rider should be confident and in control on a forward going horse at a steady canter in the open over uneven ground. Has ridden for a number of years. There are  long stretches of fast riding especially on days 1 and 3.
