Kom-Emine Trail - Bulgaria's Longest Mountain Trail 890 , 20 Days

With its 650 km., Kom-Emine is Europe's longest high mountain uninterrupted hiking trail. Starting from the westernmost peak in the Balkan mountain - Mt. Kom (2016 m) it follows the main ridge to the East right to the Black Sea and Cape Emine. The trail's average elevation is 770 m. with more then 29 peaks with an altitude of above 2000 м .The highest point on the trail is Botev Peak at 2376 m. The daily walking distances vary from 20 to 40 km (5-8 hours walking). The trail is waymarked in white-red-white with the initials E-3 but waymarking is of poor quality and almost impossible to follow particularly on the Eastern part of the trail.


Itinerary: 

Day 1. Transfer from Sofia to Petrohan. Walk to Kom Hut for overnight – 3.5 hours

Day 2. Kom Hut (1620 m) - Kom Peak (2016 m) – Petrohan Hut (1470 m) – Lakatnik (8 hours)
Our trek begins with the highest peak of West Balkan mountains – Mt.Kom (2016 m). From there you can see Berkovitsa and the surrounding fields, as well as Montana town and the Ogosta Dam. We continue on the main grassy ridge east to Proboinitza Hut. A steep descent towards one of the lowest points along the routе - Lakatnik train station where we will spend the night camping. 

Day 3. Lakatnik - Trastenaya Hut (1340 m) -Leskova Hut (1340 m) (11 hours) 
The day begins with an uphill which will bring us to Trastenaya Hut, known for its raspberry wine production. We will then proceed the Leskova Hut, near which  we will spend the night camping. 
 
Day 4. Leskova Hut (1340 m) – Murgash Peak (1687 m) – Vitinia Pass (970 m) (7 hours)

Today we pass through the spectacular Iskar Gorge and climb the Murgash Peak. After enjoing the amazing mountain view from the summit we hike east to Vitinia Pass for overnight camping.  

Day 5. Vitinia Pass (970 м ) – Svishtiplaz Hut (1475 m) (12 hours)
After Vitinia Pass the trail ascends through old beech forest  following the main ridge and gaining altitude climbing Murgana and Svishtiplaz Peak (1888 m)

Day 6. Svishtiplaz Hut (1475 m) - Echo Hut (1675 м) (12 hours)
The trail today follows E3 crossing one of the most picturesque parts of Central Balkan National Park including the peaks Teteven Baba (2070) and Vezhen (2198), enjoying the breathtaking views to the Steneto Nature Reserve. Overnight in Echo Hut.

Day 7. Echo Hut (1675 м) – Dobrila Hut (1804 m) (11 hours)
Ascending the main ridge again we climb Kozya Stena Peak (1670 m), Kartalkaya, Gerdektepe before reaching Dobrila Hut for overnight

Day 8. Dobrila Hut (1804 m) – Tuza Hut (1510 m) (11 hours)
Today we climb the highest peak of the Balkan range(Stara Planina) – Botev (2376 m) the path crossing another nature reserve – Dzendema. Overnight in Tuza Hut.

Day 9. Tuza Hut (1675 м) – Shipka Pass (1195 m) (8 hours)
Gradually the trail eastwards starts losing altitude. We pass one of the most beautiful rock formations on the route – Singing Rocks before reaching Shipka Pass. Overnight in a small local hotel.

Day 10. Shipka Pass (1195 m) – Gramadliva Hut (876 m) (9 hours)
Today we visit the Shipka memorial to those who died for the Liberation of Bulgaria during the Battles of Shipka Pass in the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-78. Then we pass by Buzludza Monument reaching Gramadliva hut for overnight.

Day 11. Gramadliva Hut (876 m) – Bukovets Hut (1100 m) (9 hours)
Passing through old pine forests and quiet mountain pastures we climb Bukovets peak and after enjoyng the views from the summit we descend to Bukovets hut close by for overnight.

Day 12. Bukovets Hut (1100 m) – Kamchia Source (940 m) (9 hours)
We continue to the East passing by Chumerna Hut, Buyuk Kaya Peak (1162 m) to reach Vratnik Pass and the source of Kamchia river where we camp for the night.

Dat 13. Kamchia Source – Kotel (640 m), 7 hours
Another long day walking, descending through oak and beech forests to the old town of Kotel. Hotel.

Day 14. Kotel – Vurbitsa, 8 hours
The main ridge is getting more and more difficult to follow, the path cutting through century-old forests and high mountain pastures. Camping.

Day 15. Vurbitsa – Rishki Pass, 8 hours
Another day of walking where the path is not well marked, mostly following sheep trails, descending to Rishki Pass (400 m). Camping.

Day 16. Rishki Pass – Duskotna, 8 hours
We countinue our trip passing by Luda Kamchia reservoir along the river Kamchia. We camp near Duskotna village for the night

Day 17. Duskotna – Kozichino (410 m), 9 hours
Another 8-9 hours walking before we reach the small village of Kozichino for overnight. Walking through thick bushes we can feel the smell of the sea already. Camping.

Day 18. Kozichino – Cape Emine – Irakli, 10 hours
Our last but also one of the longest day hikes. Аfter leaving Kozichene and corssing the main Varna-Burgas road,  we reach our final
destination  – Cape Emine - the end of the European walking route E3. We stay in a guest house in Irakli

Day 19. Rest day

Day 20. Departure
Transfer to Sarafovo/Burgas to take the train or coach back to Sofia
