Togo

 Explore Togo

Sandwiched between Ghana and Benin you will find the small West African country, Togo, which can be experienced on our roundtrip to Ghana, Togo and Benin. In 12 days we explore the countries with common coastline to the Gulf of Guinea, and in small groups we get close to the 3 culturally different nations.

Togo has only 8.5 million inhabitants and with 56,785 km2 is the smallest country on our cultural roundtrip in West Africa. The economy is based on agriculture, mainly small farms that cover the family's needs, while larger export-oriented farms grow coffee and cotton. Togo has one of the world's largest productions of phosphate for fertilizer due to the rich occurrence of calcium phosphate. The low Togo and Atakora mountains divide the country into two and we enter from Ghana directly into the heart of the country, where we visit Kara, Sokode and Atakpame and meet ethnic groups that are led by chiefs and practice rituals that require courage, will or protection of fetishes. Togo is visited after the stay in Ghana and the cultural tour ends in Benin.

A visit to Togo is included in our Roundtrip to Ghana, Togo, Benin - Voodoo and Tribal Festivals. The cultural experiences in Togo can be found below:

Fantastic trip with Penguin Travel! Loved all the sights we got to see in Saudi Arabia. Abdulaziz and Lyuben were very helpful, kind, and knowledgeable. Would highly recommend for solo and group travelers, especially those wanting an "off the beaten path" experience. Can't wait to travel with Penguin again!
