Sozopol (Bulgaria)

Sozopol (Bulgaria)

Sozopol is a small ancient town located 30 km south of Bourgas on the southern Bulgarian Black Sea Coast. It is one of the oldest coastal towns in Bulgaria. According to the legend it was founded by Greek colonists in 610 BC under the name of Apollonia. The town had been an independent Greek state for many years, but fell under the Roman reign and lost part of its significance. With the Ottoman invasion on the Balkan Peninsula in the 14th c. the town’s flourishing period came to its end. In the 4th c. the town’s name was changed to Sozopol, which means “the town where you find refuge”, obviously due to the harbour. Today the town is mostly a seaside resort known for the Apollonia art and film festival named after one of Sozopol's ancient names. Sozopol, just like Nessebar to the North of Burgas, has an old and a new part. The old part of the town is situated on a small peninsula with a promenade all the way around. Here you can find wonderful restaurants with a sea view and cozy places in their gardens. Artists, handicraftsmen and photographers love the old town’s narrow, paved alleys, historic churches and the old wood facades of the houses. More than 45 old houses in Sozopol are declared cultural monuments. The new part of the town starts at the point where the peninsula turns into mainland. Here the tourists can find a lot of shopping opportunities, markets, cafes, etc. The isle of St. Ivan is situated just 2 km away from the old town in northern direction. St. Ivan is the biggest Black Sea isle in Bulgarian territorial waters. The isle shelters a sonar lighthouse, which together with the lighthouse on the Emine cape shows the way to the Bourgas Bay.
