JUNE 5-th - THE WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY AT DRAGOMAN MARSH
On May the 5-th (2005) a festive celebration of the World Environment Day was carried out at Dragoman Marsh, some 35 km away from Sofia.
Organizers of this event were the Dragoman Municipality, Balkani Wildlife Society (http://www.balkani.org), the Balkans Youth Club, RIOEW-Sofia,several environmental clubs and secondary schools from Serbia, volunteers from the Netherlands, Belgium, Macedonia etc.
As a part of these activities the film "The Living Marsh" was broadcasted to the people, presenting the biodiversity of the marshland and its surroundings. Educational games were also organized for the children, showing them the microscopic invertebrates, living in the waters of the marsh. But the biggest attraction for the visitors and the participants were the observation tower, built especially for watching birds from higher point of view (above the reedbeds) and not the least theeducational signs, presenting information for different species of plants, inhabiting the marsh. The latter were made with the financial support of Penguin Travel Company, which continues its sponsorship to the nature conservation measures in the area, thus ensuring better understanding of the natural processes in the wetland within the local community and tourists in general.
